Peter Hansen founds P. Hansen Transfer Co. in Seattle’s Pioneer Square, hauling freight and baggage from the train station and waterfront piers by horse-drawn wagon.
The original office outgrows itself twice over, expanding from 211 to 311 and finally 315 Occidental Ave as the freight and baggage business builds its Pioneer Square reputation.
Hansen Bros. opens a University District office and hauls trunks, baggage, and freight for the Alaska-Yukon-Pacific Exposition — the fairgrounds that would later become the UW campus.
Brothers Jim and Henry Hansen take the wheel of the company’s first mechanical trucks, retiring the horse-drawn wagons that carried the business its first two decades.
Jim Hansen hand-builds a furniture van from a flatbed trailer, hitched to a 1938 Chevrolet tractor — replacing a 1928 Kenworth solo and doubling the company’s coastal hauling range.
